Currently, high-end machines on the market mainly use ceramic plungers and sprayed ceramic plungers. We need to consider which type of plunger to choose for a machine, as it is a very important issue. High-pressure plunger pumps are the core components of high-pressure washers, and the plunger is the most easily worn part in the core mechanism. Its quality directly affects the overall performance of the machine.

The basic performance of ceramic plungers depends on the properties of the ceramic used. Ceramic is heat-resistant and wear-resistant, making it an excellent material. However, to determine which type of plunger is more suitable for plunger pumps, we should first understand the differences and basic properties between ceramic plungers and sprayed ceramic plungers. Although they look similar, they are actually quite different. Different manufacturing processes result in different product performance.
World-renowned high-quality plunger pumps, including American CAT (Cat brand), Italian INTERPUMP (Interpump), and other top crankshaft pumps, all use ceramic plungers. After years of practice, they have found that plunger pumps using ceramic plungers perform better. Currently, all European high-end high-pressure pump manufacturers use ceramic plungers, with none using sprayed ceramic plungers. Therefore, generally speaking, pumps using ceramic plungers have significantly better quality than those using sprayed ceramic plungers.
Currently, there is a claim in the domestic market that sprayed ceramic plungers are an upgraded version of ceramic plungers and that sprayed ceramic plungers are better than ceramic plungers. Let's take an objective look at the comparison between the two products.
Ceramic plungers have the following characteristics:
(1) Ceramic plunger is made of high-performance technical ceramic material, which has high hardness, wear resistance, heat resistance, and corrosion resistance, ensuring reliable material properties.
(2) The working surface of the ceramic plunger adopts a unique machining method to obtain a microporous structure with self-lubricating properties, changing the traditional mechanism of sliding friction and lubrication in plunger pumps.
(3) The inner cavity surface adopts a fluid structure with no dead corners or grooves. The inner cavity surface and plunger surface are machined to a mirror finish using advanced high-precision internal and external cylindrical grinding machines, and the outer surface is vibration polished for easy cleaning and disinfection.
(4) The pump body structure adopts fine sealing with the product structure, making disassembly convenient.
(5) This product has passed corrosion resistance, acid and alkali resistance, and safety performance tests. All indicators have reached international advanced levels.
(6) The ceramic-plated plunger is indeed better than the original metal plunger, as the surface is also ceramic. However, there are several issues to consider:
(1) Prolonged use may cause water ingress into the oil tank, resulting in the oil in the crankcase turning into a white turbid liquid, increasing friction and ultimately reducing the lifespan of the entire pump.

(2) It cannot withstand high pressure, and the coating is prone to peeling off. Once the coating falls off, it increases friction, causing damage to water seals and oil seals, leading to frequent leakage issues.
(3) When damaged, the entire unit must be replaced, increasing maintenance costs and difficulty.
(4) Since ceramic plunger pumps are clearly superior to sprayed ceramic plungers, why do more manufacturers use sprayed ceramic plungers?
(5) Because the machining difficulty of ceramic plungers is extremely high, requiring very high precision imported equipment. Most manufacturers lack the funds to purchase expensive imported equipment, thus lacking the corresponding production capacity and unable to process the matching parts for ceramic plungers.
